DLC
EA Bioware is really pulling some bullshit these
days, and I fear this is the future of "DLC" in all games. And
I'm not talking about day one DLC either; there's more than that going on,
now. Look at Gears 3, for example. Typical DLC, right? New weapons
skins, etc. See, one you spend, like fifty MSP or whatever. Mass Effect
3 has "Spectre Packs" that are essentially a form of gambling.
You pay your fifty MSP and you get a "pack" that contains random
content; mostly useless. Buy enough packs and you might get the content
you actually want. It's just like the card games Magic, Pokemon,
etc. They even word it the same; "contains 5 common items, 2 uncommons
and a chance of a rare." |

Their computer MMO Star
Wars - The Old Republic just introduced the same thing with "Cartel
Packs." There are some very rare items people want. Namely, a white
lightsaber crystal, the mask of Nihilus and a hover throne. I know a guy
who has already spent $100 trying to get those items. This practice has
already become illegal in South Korea, but I have the feeling we in the
States are going to embrace it and find a way to tax it. I don't mind
paying for the extra content and supporting the games I love. I do mind
being played as a sucker. I don't want to spend all my MSP on a chance
to get the DLC that I want. That is just bullshit. I don't even mind random
item distribution in and of itself. In fact, I thought that was one of
the good things about Lost Planet 2. Everyone had random upgrades.
That was a random reward system, but you weren't paying MSP for it...
