The XBox One/PC versions appear to be somewhere in between, with features from from both generations seamlessly-embedded into Microsoft's online ecosystem and stat-keeping. The stat-keeping and tracking of XBox Live that oversees your progress in the XBox One version makes it feel like you're being watched and monitored as if you were actually in the game. It even monitors the number of enemy shots you deflect! It then compares your stats those you know on your friend list (who may have been fallen Striders in their own regard). If there was ever a game that Microsoft's all-encompassing data-collecting ecosystem was made for, it was absolutely Capcom's 2014 Strider. Where the PlayStation 3 and its emphasis on the single-player experience perfectly suited Strider's solitary journey to defeat oppression, the XBox One suits the enhanced version as an oppressively-monitored side of the same coin. It's Download theme matches perfectly one of the strategies in modern totalitarianism is to decrease ownership because ownership is power. Citizens get power from ownership, and wealth allows freedom. |

It would have been great if they had somehow differentiated them from each other with title additions, though. Anything (even small) would have helped. "Strider Mk.II", or "Strider Mk.III" would have been fitting (since they relate to one of the game's bosses). This 2014 Strider even has nods to ninjas from past Capcom games in the form of costume colors. Each costume color has a theme that matches the ninja they are a throwback to. Examples include (but are not limited to) the almighty Guy from Final Fight, the underrated Ginzu from Captain Commando, female ninja Ibuki from Street Fighter III, and Hayato from Star Gladiator. To my knowledge, they are available in all different versions of Strider (2014), but it would have been cool if they had been exclusives to give each version more identity connected to their past with Capcom. For example, Hayato for Sony hardware (since he was in Star Gladiator) would have been cool to see. Exclusives give us different reasons to try different versions! As the old saying goes, "variety is the spice of life"... |

Each of these Capcom ninja throwback costume themes could have granted Strider unique moves capable of infinite expansion of the gameplay. The Guy costume could have given Strider some of his hand-to-hand moves from Marvel VS. Capcom. The Ginzu one could have given Strider combos from Captain Commando. The Hayato costume could have allowed Strider counters and finishing moves from the criminally-underrated Star Gladiator and/or Plasma Sword. Parrying could have been a defensive option for Strider in the Ibuki theme. Strider could have used a mean chain blade from RedEarth in his Kenji theme. The list could even include some characters from the 8-Bit Strider, with each having abilities based on their corresponding items (such as water boots). The list goes on and on, and the wait for such additions would have been well-worth it for each version. |
