Recently, it's been the trend to demand "better AI" in next-gen games running on next-gen systems with more CPU power. If "better AI" is anything like these absolutely terrible ally "bots" in Gears 4, then I wholeheartedly disagree. Why would anyone want more frustrating AI that acts like the exact players everyone hates? An AI that never makes mistakes, just does higher damage, steals kills, or steals weapons right out from under your nose? Yeah, that really sounds "better". Seriously, who wants this? Surely, nobody who actually wants to have fun when they play a video game. I mean, it is interesting that these CPU allies have come to emulate human players well-enough that the difference is almost indiscernible, but it also begs the question: "Do we really want this?" |

The epic soundtrack for Gears 4 was masterfully-done. So well-done, in fact, that it leaves you wanting more. That's the case with a lot of games after a certain generation, though, since it was made the norm to have no background music. I've always been disappointed by this, and games like this make it even more disappointing because of how good the little bit you hear actually is. They're both dark games with a horror aspect to them, but Spawn had an uplifting metal soundtrack, whereas Gears 4 has more of a chilling orchestrated soundtrack. Sound effects are the part of the audio we get to enjoy completely. Much like Spawn, the sound effects in Gears 4 bring all the chaos and gore of its gameplay to life. On one hand, you've got the sounds of war (gun shots, explosions, stabs), and on the other you've got the sounds of horror (things going bump in the night, growls, cries). Important, iconic sounds and voices for grenades and such are still in the game, too. |

Gears 4 is like Capcom's Spawn - In The Demon's Hand in so many ways. Though the creators of Gears 4 may not have taken inspiration from Spawn at all, it does a great job of recreating the experience! It even makes you wonder if Gears 4 is what it would be like if Capcom made a modern Spawn successor. Of course, reception determines the fate of a game, and if it was even a challenge for Gears 4 (bankrolled by Microsoft), it'd probably be just as (if not more) difficult for a new Spawn game (by Capcom). Simply put, Gears 4, even with its flaws, was very underrated. Thanks to the brainwashing of social media, some of the best parts of Gears 4 were criticized (incredible visuals, great story, stable multiplayer), whereas its worst parts were not (matching, Horde mode). Unlike other developers, the guys who made Gears 4 didn't just bring it back; they brought it back on the next-gen Unreal Engine 4 (not last-gen Unreal Engine 3), and resurrected the series. |
