Somehow less-common were the cheaper character costumes.
This was something I didn't expect. How is it that the costumes - which
are cheaper - were one of the things I saw the least online? I didn't
encounter them nearly as much as in other games like Tekken 7. Some of
the costumes are spot-on. Balrog's high-roller costume serves as a great
example of what is perfectly fitting. The white suit, the cool shades,
the golden gloves...all of it perfectly suits Iron Mike Bison! I mean,
Balrog. Laura's Story costume suits her sexy, care-free personality with
plenty of underboob. This comes out further in the Halloween costumes,
which were almost all strong showings from Capcom cameos to creative fresh
new takes on existing characters. Ryu as Bishamon is the best, followed
closely by Cammy, wrapped in thorns and roses. Ryu with red Bishamon look-alike
samurai armor and its Darkstalkers connection is probably not a coincidence.
Chun-Li, Cammy, and Charlie's Battle Costumes look the coolest, though,
and show that Capcom still has the design potential they've always had
- when they want to. Charlie's futuristic soldier costume, in particular,
shows hope for the future of character design in future Capcom fighting
games. It was once said by Capcom that ninjas are larely what made their
games stand out from other developers throughout the years, and combined
with added characters Ibuki and Zeku, the ninja-inspired design of this
Charlie costume shows that tradition still lives to this day. More importantly,
it shows that cool ninja designs are still alive in a day and age where
character design has hit an all-time low, with most characters adhering
to the oppressive, unspoken jeans/T-shirt/jacket design projected onto
weak players who don't know any better. Thankfully, Capcom keeps that
flawed "modern" design to a minimum.
Of course, if you are anything like me or Headquarters,
you would agree that some of the best costumes are the swimsuit series
for Chun-Li, Karin, Cammy, R. Mika, and Laura. Despite the rise of self-loathing,
virtue-signaling bullshit in the Western world, SFV did get swimsuit costumes.
Capcom probably had to go up against its own clueless (USA) marketing
team, but whatever the case, SFV did get sexy summer costumes. Tasteful,
beautiful, and elegant, these costumes are essential to any fan, male
or female. The nuanced contrast between them was very well done. Chun-Li's
swimsuit is mature, elegant, and gorgeous, but Karin comes off more like
a diva with her designer sunglasses, jewel-studded sandals, and straw
hat (complete with cute bow). Cammy, on the other hand, might as well
be wearing a string bikini. I was really proud of Capcom when I saw these
costumes; both because they were able to stand up to the mob, and because
they did such a great job. There were even two special costumes to promote
the Redbull brand energy drink, and both of them were cool. Nerds with
no sense of fashion have rallied against these two costumes, but they
don't know what they are talking about. Both costumes show us a side of
Ryu and Chun-Li that we never knew existed. It's amazing how dumb nerds
are all for Ryu's stupid beard costumes with the ripped clothes, yet they
go AWOL when Ryu sports baggy jeans with a hoodie and gold chain, topped
with a bucket hat. Is it that Ryu's not wearing some little tiny "skinny
jean" girl pants? Good! He doesn't need that shit! Even more unbelievable
is their denial of how absolutely gorgeous Chun-Li looks in her Redbull
costume, complete with heels, a bikini top under a fur coat, and the bright
makeup to compliment her tie-back auburn hair. These are fashionably-contemporary
versions of Ryu and Chun-Li that we never get to see. Instead of appreciating
this rare opportunity, critics preferred to see the same old lame shit
every character in every game of the generation wears (jeans and white
T-shirt under a jacket). If these "fans" are the ones making
the decisions on what costumes we get in future games of the series, prepare
to be bored out of your mind. The other costumes aren't as profound, and
some are quite unbefitting, to be honest.
