The experimentation part of making new weapons adds to the traditional brawling gameplay formula, of course, but adding even more to it is the often overlooked prerequisite of obtaining needed parts from their distinct locations in the city. Combined with the much-needed improvements made to the inventory system, seeking the parts needed for combo weapons will add that depth for players who "want more than just fighting". Inventory wheels have been added to the game that finally allow the player to organize and stockpile weapons into categories (regular weapons, firearms, and projectiles). This was a long-needed, welcome change that makes the game a lot more fun. Food also has its own category, allowing a player to hold 4-5 more times what was allowed in Dead Rising 3. From a high-performance gameplay viewpoint, it also allows for the possession of more combo weapons, which allows for more combos and the experience points that come with them. It's just a better system all around, and shows that yet again, Capcom was listening. No matter the complaints still leveled at it, the game is still Dead Rising, which means manic-brawler with the most unorthodox weapons ever seen. |

The plethora of visceral methods are followed by a plethora of flashy effects that range from blood and fire, to ice and electricity. Zombies are elementally eradicated with glowing fire as it chars, glistening ice as it crystallizes, voraciously-bubbling acid as it corrodes, and illuminating electricity as it seeks escape. The XBox One's graphics processing brings every one of them vividly to life. Dead Rising 4 is more explosive than ever before, with enough fires and explosions to remind you of Liberal American cities (like New York and Chicago) that defunded their local police. Blooming, colorful explosions illuminate the chaotic air just like in real-life when "peaceful protesters" and "activists" of those cities shot fireworks at people in their own communities (whose lives apparently didn't matter). The contrast of DR4's colorful effects in its dark environments eerily foreshadows an impending scourge of philathropist-funded domestic terrorist groups that would threaten the very foundation of the United States and its freedom. |

There are a variety of backdrops in Dead Rising 4, so you can really play any way you see fit. Disappointed that Capcom is too cowardly to make a new Knights of the Round game? Throw Frank into one of the various suits of armor and equip him with any (or all) of the medieval weaponry available. Confused at multiple Resident Evil titles a year, yet no new Final Fight? There's a Haggar costume for Frank to disperse bare-knuckle justice (with pipes, knives, and samurai swords)! Are you a fan of IPs like Captain Commando that Capcom has turned its back on? Use the Captain Commando costume with machine pistols, handguns, assault rifles, and grenades. The many themes of DR4's environments (pirates, castles, wild west, streets, sports, military, residential) allow the player to simulate and pay tribute to iconic IPs that self-loathing Capcom doesn't have the balls to resurrect. It's bittersweet, though, seeing Capcom think these characters are good-enough for Dead Rising 4, but not good-enough to get their own (new) game. |
