Viewtiful Joe's light-hearted, personable theme
of the everyday-hero is what made it so popular. It literally conveyed
the familiar story of an "everyday Joe" being a hero in
the city, while simultaneously breathing new life into it with new
perspectives. On the surface, super powers come to mind, but one
of the other big things that didn't stand out quite as much were
the bosses. Mostly based-on animals, the bosses in the Viewtiful
Joe series could be described as a satirical tribute to iconic movies.
The Wonderful 101 does this, but in a slightly different manner.
The Wonderful 101 pays the same tribute, but to iconic video games.
The keen eye can spot references to StarFox (which Platinum also
worked on for the Wii U), Gradius (said to be a favorite of Kamiya),
Metroid, Punch-Out!!, and even Super Mario Bros. Of course, Wonderful
101 pays heavy tribute to Platinum staff's previous Capcom works
like Viewtiful Joe, GodHand, and Okami.
