They were already halfway there with stage and color unlocks, then why did they stop at the characters and alternate costumes? Back in the day with Marvel VS Capcom 2 and Capcom VS SNK, it was interesting to compare what your friends had unlocked on their games; Marvel VS Capcom Infinite is missing this. Marvel VS Capcom Infinite continues Capcom's return to form in Street Fighter V, though. That is, in regards to non-playable characters. Capcom's fighters gradually allowed for most (if not all) minor, hidden, and/or boss characters to be used. Characters like Shin M. Bison and Shin Akuma eventually became playable in the Street Fighter Alpha 3 series, and most (if not all) of the "piss-ant" minor enemies in Spawn: The Demon's Hand were playable. Capcom VS SNK 2 EO also allowed players to use Shin Akuma and Omega Rugal, who were not playable in the original (arcade) version. Later, spiritual Rival Schools successor Ken'ichi and the almighty Gundam VS Gundam would break this trend, but it was still late. Making these non-playable characters playable, Capcom fighters came to lose their sense of mystery and intrigue. There was little wonder left for noncompetitive players. Thankfully, Capcom went back to keep non-playable characters non-playable in SFV, and continued to do that in MVSCI. |

These characters include completely new B.O.W.s from Resident Evil, Grand Master Meio from Strider, M.O.D.O.K., Ultron's drones, Thor's tainted kinsman, an infected Monster Hunter monster, and the Symbiote from Marvel. Then, there's endboss Ultron-Sigma, who comes in both a normal form and screen-filling form (like Onslaught from the very first Marvel VS Capcom). The B.O.W.s themselves are probably the coolest character designs Capcom has had not just in this game, but this whole generation! Their design will bring longtime players back to the days when Capcom would actually make new character designs that were cool. The ultra-evil and eerie Grand Master Meio doesn't even touch the ground as he moves about the screen, using summons and ranged attacks that require the player to adopt a totally different strategy from fighting other characters. |

Unplayable XGardians, Thor's infected kinsman, and infected Thor have different attributes; they can get out of launchers, have armor, and can walk through projectiles like Hawkeye's arrows. I'm still figuring out different things about these unplayable characters, and I've had the game since launch! Sometimes, you'll see these unplayable characters do Special Moves and Super Moves (or even normal moves) you didn't even know they had! From time to time, they'll even rip out a strategy that will leave you in a trap you didn't expect. I reckon that much like Street Fighter V and its unplayable characters, some interesting things will be discovered in the future by a crazed fan (like Desk). More enemies from the Capcom side would have been cool, though. Unorthodox fights against MegaMan enemies, or even some Strider enemies would have been cool. It is cool that they put a screen-filling Monster Hunter boss in the game, though, since their appearances in games outside their home series are rare. |
