In the Story Mode, there are 1-on-1 battles, and some consecutive jump-in battles straight from SFA3's World Tour Mode! They even put some 2-on-1 battles in there that will remind fans of the Dramatic Battle in the Street Fighter Alpha series. Added onto those are other battle types that involve fighting on multiple planes. How does this work? Well, there are a few different types, but in one of them Chris fights a giant Symbiote in the background while you fight in the foreground. In two others, you fight several unplayable characters back-to-back-to-back in the foreground while being assaulted from the background by either M.O.D.O.K. or Grand Master Meio. In one of the last battles of the game, the fate of a captured Dante hangs in the balance and you need to defeat Ultron Omega before his health reaches zero. These parts, while trivialized and/or never mentioned, are fun and break up the monotony some players are bothered by in fighting games. Also, I saw Ultron Omega do a Super Move in the Story Mode that I have never seen him do in the Arcade Mode, where he proclaims that he (they?) will "end everything" while releasing a screen-filling purple beam of death. It could just be that I never fulfilled the conditions to see it in Arcade Mode, but I've played the game extensively, so it seems unlikely. One area I thought Game Informer was wrong on, however, was the soundtrack. They said that it was mostly forgettable, without so much as a mention of the title screen, character select, versus screen, or credit roll music. These are all memorable tracks. It also wasn't mentioned how the tracks for the Capcom characters are all remixes of iconic tracks from the original games they're from - all of which are considered to be the opposite of forgettable. For those who doubt that, please see the undisputed popularity of the iconic soundtracks of Ghouls N Ghosts, MegaMan X, Final Fight, Street Fighter II, and the like. |

Morrigan's, while not as popular, was remixed perfectly from her ethereal Night Warriors background music. I'm not sure if Strider's music was remixed or totally original, but either way they did a great job with it and it's probably one of the best in the game. It's hard to hear the music with all the sounds of battle, though, and there's a lot of them. Just like every other game in the VS series, Capcom put a ton into the sounds of battle for each individual character and move. Attacks are delivered in a plethora of sounds that include (but are definitely not limited to) swoops, slashes, thuds, clangs, slaps, cuts, scratches, burns, booms, freezes, and thunder crashes. Special Moves like Gamora's plasma guns and Sigma's sword make sounds that are indescribable, but unique, nonetheless. Characters all have the unique voices they're known for, and their cries of defeat eerily echo around you as they fall. After playing it a lot, you even start to notice the game reveals subtle background sounds in places like the VS screen. |

synthesized soundtrack is pretty good! Ryu, Chun-Li, and Arthur's background
music is based on the catchy, iconic tunes of their respective series, with
sound effects to match. Strider's new track stands out as probably the best
in the game. The credit roll music was clearly inspired by a track from
Marvel Super Heroes, too. Post-fight dialogue is hilarious as it seamlessly
fuses the two universes together: "Such a strange creature. Perhaps one of Loki's monsters?" (Thor to Nemesis) "No, there's something else, something ugly, something malignant... Frank West, ladies and gentleman!" (Spiderman to Frank West) "I was in my office doing paperwork...next thing you know, I ended up here." "Without a shirt on?" (Haggar to Frank West) |
